Welcome

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. Pol M. Rommens
President ESTES 09–10

Dear Colleagues,

The ESTES is a young and very dynamic European society, who strives for an optimal care of the trauma and emergency surgery patient via harmonization of medical training, the establishment of trauma centers and regional trauma networks, and via continuous medical education. Sections on disaster and military surgery, education, emergency surgery, visceral trauma and skeletal trauma focus on different fields of activity of our society. The European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery and the annual congress are two main pillars. The congress gives the opportunity to thousands of colleagues of all European and many other countries to share the experience of their daily work in trauma care and emergency surgery and to confront themselves with new findings from research and clinic. Scientific sessions and personal meetings as well give a feeling of recognition and respect of your own work and give support to ideas and projects for personal or structural improvement.

With Graz and Budapest, the ESTES congresses started in the center of Europe. After going far east to Antalya and far west to Brussels, the 2011 event will take place in the south. Dr. Mauro Zago, upcoming Congress President invites us to Milan. This very dynamic, attractive and historical city with numerous excellent medical institutes and worldwide known medical personalities seems to be an excellent place for exchange of knowledge and expanding one’s network of individual and professional relations. I wish Mauro and his colleagues from the Italian Trauma and Emergency Surgery Society good luck for the preparation of this most important meeting and want to express my gratitude for their outstanding efforts and input. I stimulate you all to block the ESTES 2011 congress dates in your manual or electronic agenda. It will be a great pleasure to welcome you in Milan!

With kind regards,

Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. Pol M. Rommens

FEEDING BRAINS, TRAINING FOR LIFE

Dr. Mauro Zago
Congress President

Dear Colleagues,

Milan will host the 12th European Congress on Trauma and Emergency Surgery in April 2011.

We are proud and honored to invite you to attend since now. ESTES gathers together distinguished European professionals engaged in a variety of specialties such as general surgery, orthopedics and skeletal surgery, intensive care, emergency medicine and prehospital emergency care. This Meeting is a unique possibility to update your knowledge and expertise, sharing your experience with the most eminent experts coming from Europe and from all around the world.

It is a common feeling that ‘the world is running fast and we have to step forward’. This is why we are working hard to offer you the opportunity, in Milan, to keep on running faster and faster, as explained by our motto feeding Brains, training for Life.

Increasing knowledge, learning more and more, comparing our practice with the best ones in the world is essential for our daily work. An International Meeting is the most stimulating way to nourish our scientific curiosity and need to get in touch with new ideas.

Trauma and Emergency Surgery, both in dedicated Centers and in General Hospitals, is a matter of Team-working and a continuing challenge in organization, technical skills, educational planning, decision-making and, most important, patient outcome. Our patients require us to keep training ourselves and our team to give them the best results.

For this reason, ESTES is working for a European specific curriculum and expertise in Acute Care Surgery. Therefore, after having built bridges in Brussels with all professionals involved in acute surgical care, the scientific program of the 2011 ESTES Congress is designed to offer a cutting edge update both for those who work primarily in an emergency setting and for those who take emergency call on a less frequent basis.

Juniors, Senior staff and Residents will get various and attractive postgraduate pre-Congress Courses, Keynote Lectures, the chance to present researches and some short hands-on workshops during the Meeting.

Spring is a wonderful time to discover Milan and its rich heritage of history, art and culture.

On behalf of ESTES Board and the Local Organizing Committee, please save the date and don’t miss this extraordinary appointment in Milan 2011!
