Pre-Congress Course

Introducing the 12th European Trauma and Emergency Surgery Congress in Milan (April 27th-30th), San Raffaele Hospital, in collaboration with ESTES Section for Disaster and Military Surgery, organizes the Second Italian Edition of MRMI.

Background and aims
Disaster Medicine is the Science for analysis and development of methodology requested to handle situations where available resources are insufficient in relation to immediate need of medical care.

Training in Disaster Medicine is different from training in other medical fields where you have plenty of patients’ availability to train on under qualified supervision (on job training).

This doesn’t exist in Disaster Medicine, where major accidents and disasters are rare events. Disasters are difficult and stressful situations, requiring maximal effort from all involved, and no training opportunities.

Thus, training in Disaster Medicine must be based on simulated situations. Unfortunately many of such training programs put a major emphasis on the dramatic and spectacular aspect, failing their objectives and purposes: essentially transmission of decision making.

As part of a chain, decision making must be articulated in every single component: pre-hospital, transport, in-hospital, communication and coordination & command; the trainees are requested to familiarize with all these different roles.

The use of MACSIM Training System puts the students in front of the consequences of their decisions and actions on the single patient and on the entire amount of casualties, scoring the final goal of this course.

Design of the course
The course is built up in 2 steps:

1. lectures + practical training section under guidance of instructors (all participants are requested to play every station);
2. 2 full-scale simulation exercises: all participants are actively working in their respective functions.
